2000年之后的艺术关于“关系”的讨论突然变得显性，艺术向公共的渗透强化了这种形态，也催发了针对艺术之生产边界的讨论。全球化语境里的身份追问，城市极速发展后的都市更新，艺术作为城市创新力量的介入，地方性和差异化之主动强调，彼此交织，共同汇集成“关系”讨论的社会情境。
“关系”之讨论涉及主客体，新的关系模式生产和既定空间的再定义，构成了讨论的首要基础，艺术家个体的创造力如何在复杂的当代秩序中被激发，从而成为一种驱动观念革新的力量，是“关系”之生产的讨论关键点。展览由HW工厂计划（开启自2016年5月）展开，从反思“艺术－社会”的关系入手，通过工厂计划所设定的具体对象，强调艺术在此遭遇之下的创造能动性，并且在“艺术－生产－关系”的反复对话中，重新审视艺术在当下社会语境里的创造能动性。高速发展的城市化现场，持续萎缩中的城市中小工厂体系，当代实践如何面对（应对）社会现场和语境——是“HW工厂计划”思考的三个基础问题。对于工厂而言，糟糕的制造业生存环境，艺术之植入是或近或远的有关创意经济的实践及尝试；对于艺术而言，工厂系统所带来的具体社会语境，以及它在城市极速发展进程中所遭遇现实情景，都极大的刺激和触发着艺术的讨论边界和主题。城市议题，经济议题，工厂系统，艺术创作和生产，媒介或展示，艺术实践和艺术体制等，是项目必定涉及的内容。
本次展览以参加“HW工厂计划”的艺术家作品为主体，核心讨论点：被审视的（艺术）生产与待激活的社会场域。在正常展出的同时，作为城市公共空间的美术馆为本次展览提供了一次新的讨论边界——以“展中展”形式出现在美术馆，按照商业家具博览会布置展示产品的展览；同期在上海举办的国际家具博览会，艺术家作品将替代工厂产品参加展出。
Around the year of 2000, discussion on the issue of “relationship” became dominant in the field of art. The infiltration of art into the public reinforces this form and promotes the debade regarding the boundaries of art. The questioning of identity in the context of globalization, art as a creational force in the constructions of cities, and the emphasis on aboriginality and diversity, intertwine with each other, and formulate the social background for the discussion on “relationship”.
The discussions of “relationship” involve both the subject and the object. The generation of new patterns of relationships and the redefinition of the established spaces constitute the foundation for these discussions. The question of how to inspire artists’ personal creative capacity in the complicated contemporary social order and how to make use of this capacity as a driving force in today’s innovative activities lies in the core part of the discussions regarding “relationship”. This exhibition is based on the HW Art Project (initiated in May, 2016), which inspired reflections on the connection between art and society. It stresses the initiatives of art creation by confronting the specific object set by the project, and re-examine the force of art in the present social environment. There are three fundamental problems that formulates the HW Art Project：the fast-moving urbanization of cities, the continuously shrinking small-and-medium-sized factory system, and the issue of how contemporary art practice faces the social context. For factories existing in the perishing manufacturing situation, art provides opportunities for innovative practice and experiment. On the other way around, the specific social context and the situation factories faced in the fast-developing cities stimulate and expand the boundaries of art. The issue of city development, economy, factory system, art creation and production, medium and ways of display, as well as art practice and system, all formulate the content of the HW Art Project.
The exhibition, featuring works by artists who participated in the HW Art Project, focuses on the problems of the examined practice of (art) production and social field waiting to be activated. As a space for displaying, the museum also serves as a platform for discussion that will expand the boundaries for the exhibition —— in the form of presenting exhibitions in an exhibition， the exhibition space is designed as a furniture expo. Meanwhile, works of the participating artists will also be presented at the International Furniture Expo held in Shanghai as productions from the factory.
